A village on three levels
Rocamadour reads from the bottom up: the market street, the religious city with its sanctuaries built into the rock, then the castle on the plateau. A grand staircase links the whole thing, and it is climbed on foot.
The site is a historic stage on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela, which explains how many chapels are packed into so little space.
Why a shuttle makes sense here
Rocamadour has no railway station. Access is by road, and the car parks sit well away from the village, up on the plateau. A private shuttle with driver drops you as close to the entrance as possible and collects the group in the same place afterwards.
It is a long drive: leaving early and returning at the end of the day is more comfortable in one vehicle than split across several cars.
