The old town
The centre of Sarlat is a tangle of lanes, town houses and small squares, preserved to the point of being used as a film set on a regular basis. The Saturday market takes over the whole town.
Once there, everything is done on foot. Parking is the weak point in high season: being dropped off and picked up settles it.
The valley around
Around Sarlat, the Dordogne valley lines up perched villages and castles — La Roque-Gageac, Beynac, Domme. Further north, Lascaux and its reconstructed cave; to the east, the Padirac chasm and Rocamadour.
None of these sites are linked to each other by public transport. A shuttle with a driver strings them together in one day, and the group does not scatter across car parks.
