An upper town, and a stairway
Old Auch sits between the river and the cathedral square. The monumental stairway links the two, and the slope is the first thing visitors notice. Being dropped at the top rather than the bottom changes the day, especially with children or anyone who walks with difficulty.
The statue of d'Artagnan, the Gascon musketeer turned novel character, stands halfway up those steps. It is where groups usually agree to meet.
Sainte-Marie cathedral
Sainte-Marie cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela. People come for its 16th-century stained glass and its carved oak choir stalls.
The Armagnac tower next door is the landmark you see from the plain as you arrive by road.
The Gers around it
Auch is the gateway to the Gers: bastide villages, markets, Armagnac and Floc de Gascogne. With a shuttle, several stops fit into one day, and nobody has to drive after a tasting.
