Day trip by shuttle from Toulouse to Montauban

Montauban is the closest brick town to Toulouse, and one of the easiest to see in half a day. Its Place Nationale, ringed by a double row of arcades, needs no map.

Place Nationale

The heart of Montauban is a square framed by a double gallery of brick arcades. Cafés fill the ground floor; the market is held there several mornings a week, and that is the best time to be there.

Ingres, Bourdelle and the Tarn

The Ingres Bourdelle museum occupies the former bishop's palace above the river Tarn. It holds the paintings and drawings of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, born in the town, and the sculptures of Antoine Bourdelle, also from Montauban.

The Pont-Vieux has crossed the Tarn since the 14th century. The view of the brick town from the opposite bank is the one on every photograph.

Half a day that combines well

Montauban pairs naturally with Moissac: same department, same direction out of Toulouse. A shuttle lets you do both in a day, which train connections make awkward.
