The walled city, and the rest of the town
Carcassonne works on two levels: the fortified medieval city on its hill, and the Bastide Saint-Louis below, on the far side of the Aude. The Pont-Vieux links the two and gives you the view everybody photographs.
The double ring of ramparts and the Château Comtal are walked rather than driven. Allow a good half-day if you do not want to rush.
A 90-minute walk, or the whole day
We offer a guided walk through the fortified city lasting 1 hour 30. The price is given on request. Many groups prefer the transfer alone and visit at their own pace: the driver drops you off, waits, and leaves when you are ready.
Parking, the real argument
In high season the car parks fill early and the last stretch is on foot. A private shuttle with driver drops the group at the entrance, including anyone who finds walking difficult, and parks elsewhere.
